FREELOSOPHY MANUAL FOR NON-SPORTY PEOPLE
THE 3 MOST BEAUTIFUL PLACES TO VISIT, NOT TOO FAR FROM TORBOLE
Sport on Lake Garda, kite surfing courses, windsurfing, sailing and last but not least climbing in Arco and trekking in the surrounding mountains in Trentino. This is what we think of when we say Lake Garda, but there is actually much more than this. Would you like to have a relaxing holiday on Lake Garda? Us Freelosophers at the Hotel Santoni know exactly what to recommend. Why not discover new hidden gems, allow yourself a leisurely relaxing holiday, always in direct contact with nature and culture.
There are 3 places I love to go on a day out, where I can not only relax but also learn more about the local culture and I would like to share them with you:
VERONA - The city of love
For me, a city with an incredible charm.
Famous for the Arena and Romeo and Juliet' s balcony, it actually offers more than you could ever imagine From the many small taverns where you can taste amazing local cold meats with a glass of red wine, to "Ponte Pietra", where you can admire the entire city. Do you love shopping? Don't miss out on the famous Via Mazzini, with its wide range of shops (you will definitely need a full credit card, it is very hard not to be tempted by all the amazing clothes and shoes!). Do you love history and want to discover more about italian culture? Book a visit to Castelvecchio and "Scaligero" bridge, the Roman theatre and the "Lamberti" tower. Verona will fascinate you! It is so rich from both an archeological and a cultural point of view. You will need a whole day to visit it all, take your time and admire the many views of the Adige river. If you have lots of time and are there during the summer months (june-july-august) you can't miss out on one of the numerous Operas shown at the Arena.
It can maybe seem like something a bit boring (I used to think that too), but they are absolutely amazing and it's worth every penny! Try it to believe it!
Verona is about 90 km from Torbole sul Garda, but you can easily reach it by several means of transport (car, train or bus) however the best solution is definitely to go by car as it will take you less than an hour to get there. Verona can be very hot and crowded during the summer so we would recommend to visit it during may-september-october.
IL VITTORIALE DEGLI ITALIANI - la casa di Gabriele d'Annunzio
Gabriele D'Annunzio was an extrovert and determined writer and poet. Maybe not all of you know this, but his villa on Lake Garda is an incredible place, a real museum that you must visit during your holiday on the lake.
The Vittoriale is located in Gardone di Riviera, on the south of Lake Garda, about 50 km from Torbole. To reach it you should drive along the Gardesana, a road that runs directly by the lake, with the most stunning views. If you don't want to drive, you can go by ferry, an alternative fun way of reaching the other side of Lake Garda.
Gabriele D'Annunzio's villa is only a short walk away from the road and its park is considered as one of the most beautiful green areas of Europe. In the park you will find numerous statues and monuments, such as the Nave Puglia, a real boat located right in the middle of the garden. There is also a beautiful amphitheatre in the park, where they still hold many concerts and events along with an auditorium and a mausoleum. Your visit to this beautiful location is still not over.. the best has yet to come! You must also see the real home of Gabriele D'Annunzio, with its extravagant furniture. On one of the tables there are still his reading glasses that he left there before he passed away. If you travel here by car, don't forget to stop in Limone on the way back (20 km from Torbole sul Garda), where you can admire the amazing "Limonaie" and why not stop for an aperitif in this beautiful village.
TENUTA DI SAN LEONARDO - for real wine lovers
As you may already know, Italy is particularly famous for its good wine and tasty food!
For this reason, you should take some time to visit the famous Tenuta di San Leonardo. It is located in Avio, only 30 km from Torbole sul Garda, and you can easily reach it by car via the motorway A22. The journey will take you about 30 minutes and the Tenuta is open all day, from morning to evening.
Daily tours are organised to show you around the Tenuta and their vinyards. Don't forget to book in advance! Different types of visits are available and I personally recommend to book the one which includes wine tasting, accompanied by local cold cuts. It is definitely a great way to spend a few very pleasant hours with friends. If you want to know all about the different guided tours, don't hesitate to come to reception, I will be more than happy to tell you all about them and recommend you the best one.
If you enjoyed the wine that much that you had a few glasses too many, you can relax on the grass outside and take your time before leaving!. To end the day in the best of ways, you can enjoy an aperitif at the Wind's Bar in Torbole whilst deciding where to go to dinner.
If you are curious and want to discover more, come by reception of the Hotel Santoni Freelosophy and I will tell you more and advise you on the best excursions you can do!
